PLANET COMICONTEST 2013 WINNER

Before we get to the actual announcement, let me thank all the individuals who sent in their entries.  It was great to get a sense of what the show has meant to people over the years.  We’re sincerely hoping to continue that tradition in years to come as we grow and become able to offer even bigger and better experiences.

PLANET COMICONTEST ENTRY #37

I went to the San Diego Comic Con back in 2009 for the last LOST panel.  It was amazing, but I missed having my family with me.  I was thrilled to find Planet Comicon the next year.  I got to meet Mira Furlan!  I went with my son and best friend.  We  have expanded to include my younger son, husband, local friends, and friends from St. Louis.  I am grateful to Planet Comicon for providing an affordable way to share this experience with my family.  Close second will be this year when I give Wil Wheaton a hug!   –Lola Luke

PLANET COMICONTEST ENTRY #36

At Planet Comicon 2011, I escorted my 19-month-old nephew, Liam, while my brother visited with various artists.  The first time we passed Darth Maul, he waved enthusiastically at Liam, just as he waved at all the children.  Liam just stared; he was more interested in the remote-controlled R2 units.  The second time, Darth Maul removed his glove to show he had a human hand.  Liam remained unimpressed.  The third time, Liam finally consented to being picked up so I could take a picture.  In short, we met the nicest Darth Maul in the galaxy at Planet Comicon.  –Katherine Eppich

PLANET COMICONTEST ENTRY #35

When Planet Comicon came around a few years ago, I asked my new boyfriend to go.  He was excited, but had no idea what to expect since he had never been to a con.  In fear of embarrassing me, he didn’t cosplay.  The look on his face when he picked me up and I was dressed as Wonder Woman was priceless.  Each year, our goal is to bring a new friend who has never been.  We’ve succeeded so far by introducing 7 new people in the past 3 years.  We cant wait until this year’s bigger and better Planet Comicon!  –Amber Pope

PLANET COMICONTEST ENTRY #34

Having attended this convention since 2007, I’ve taken many pictures.  Most of my favorites are the costumes.  Many of them look like a small fortune was spent.  My favorites are costumes that were probably thrown together in a weekend for little or no money.  Tall or small and fat or thin, I say come as you want to be.  I haven’t worn a costume yet, but I wear a Bigfoot t-shirt.  Noell Neil asked why I wore the shirt.  I said I thought it fit the surroundings.  Sarah Douglas said the image on the shirt resembled her ex-husband. –Kyle Henson

PLANET COMICONTEST ENTRY #33

My kiddos and I have been going to Planet Comicon for years.  Every year that we have gone, we are always amazed by all of the different vendors, writers, actors/actresses, and artists.  Back in 2011, my kids participated in the costume contest.  They were talking with other kids and adults dressed up as different characters.  Last year, I brought my girlfriend and her two daughters to the convention.  My kids and her oldest daughter were in the costume contest, and they all had a blast.  I would say that the most memorable time going to Planet Comicon is that every time we have gone everyone at the convention is so nice and gets along so well, everyone dressing up, taking pictures with their favorite comic book or media star and having a great time.  –Robert Mitchell

PLANET COMICONTEST ENTRY #32

My wife and I have attended Planet Comicon for many years.  It falls during our wedding anniversary, and we reminisce every year about previous conventions.  We remember being in the small room before it moved to the room it has been in for several years.  We have made many wonderful memories and friends through the years, and it is always great to see the list of artist, actors, and vendors every year.  There are several that we have gotten to know, and we maintain contact with them throughout the year.  My wife and I usually go with a goal, like upgrading a copy of a book or completing a run or meeting someone.  Last year, the goal was me meeting Billy Dee Williams.  But as I mentioned, the show falls during our wedding anniversary, so as I waited in line she decided to surprise me with a gift.  She went to several of the artist we know and some that we had met and got me sketches of my favorite character, Captain America.  Then she gave it to me that night at dinner at her favorite restaurant, the Cheesecake Factory.  Let’s just say I was shocked, and it was one of my best memories, even though there are many to choose from.  Oh, and by the way, thank you for making sure the new venue is close to a Cheesecake Factory.  My wife is happy, and memories will be made this year.  –Shannon and Karen Peirce

PLANET COMICONTEST ENTRY #31

The year Planet had the ABC Comics artists was important to me because Kevin Nowlan was among them.  I’ve talked to him several times since, but the first time you meet one of your favorite artists is special.  I didn’t have a car at the time and so bought another ticket for someone I barely knew because he was willing to go to the show even if only for a few hours.  So…I’m back in the area that all of the ABC artists are in, looking for Kevin, but he’s on a break.  I talk to the other guys and get some autographs, and Gene Ha asks if I want a sketch – he’s doing them for free.  ‘Why, sure….How about Batman?’  ‘I’ve drawn him too much today.’  ‘Okay, how about Black Canary.  I liked that Starman story you drew with her and Starman.’  ‘Sure.’  And so I get a lovely grey marker sketch for free.  Then Kevin shows up.  We talk for a while.  I end up getting a full figure Man-Bat sketch for a paltry $20.  He draws him like he’s sneaking up on someone.  I end up putting the two sketches in one mylar so the menacing Man-Bat is facing the smiling, effervescent Black Canary.  Not bad for a couple of hours, but it’s just a memento of the first time I met an artist I admire.  –Greg Huneryager

PLANET COMICONTEST ENTRY #30

Our family goes to Planet Comicon almost every year, but last year’s was undeniably the best.  My son and his friend were blown away at the life-sized T.A.R.D.I.S.  They got to meet some amazing costumed superheroes, and I had the honor to meet Edward James Olmos.  Not only am I a huge Battlestar fan, but I made sure to let him know what an impression his character in Stand and Deliver made on me as a GED instructor.  I still have his autograph hanging in my classroom!  –Valorie Engholm
