Did that headline get your attention?  I thought it might.

While Kevin Smith won’t be attending Planet Comicon this year (cross your fingers for 2014), he will be in the Kansas City area on May 17th as part of his cross-country tour for Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie!

Not only will attendees get a chance to watch the all new cartoon movie, but afterward, they’ll be treated to a Q&A session featuring both Kevin and Jason Mewes.  Tickets are available for purchase now directly through The Midland’s box office here.

But that’s not the only way to make sure you catch the show.  We’ll also be giving away pairs of tickets through Twitter, so be sure to follow Planet Comicon at @planet_comicon for more details in the near future.

We’re expecting record attendance this year, and we thought we might need a little extra help managing the crowds. The first people who came to mind for the job? The Kansas City Roller Warriors.

These ladies will be assisting us with admissions on Saturday morning, and body-checking anyone who tries to cut in line. (Kidding.)

If you’ve never seen roller derby at its finest, we encourage you to experience Kansas City’s original flat track roller derby on Saturday night, April 6th, at Municipal Auditorium. You can find additional information here.

PLANET COMICON COSTUME CONTESTS

planet-background-1504

Many of you on the official Facebook site have been trying to determine what final trick we had up our sleeves for this year.  Well, this is it, in the form of a press release.

This year Planet Comicon will be taking part in an upcoming Syfy network series, produced by the reality television production powerhouse, 51 Minds Entertainment, an Endemol Company. The series will give viewers an inside look into the creative world of some of the best cosplayers in the country, and will document our cosplay competition, and the convention itself. Planet Comicon is proud to welcome Syfy and 51 Minds Entertainment in this unique opportunity to shine a spotlight on the world wide phenomena known as Cosplay.

In connection with the foregoing, please be advised that 51 Minds Entertainment and its affiliated entities, employees, agents, producers and contractors will be filming scenes and background material in and around the Planet Comicon convention, related to the TV production “Cos World.” By entering certain areas of the Planet Comicon convention, you may appear, and you agree to appear, in this or another production, in any and all media now known or later devised, worldwide, in perpetuity, including in advertisements and promotions. Please do not enter such areas if you do not wish to appear. We are sorry for any inconvenience, and thank you for your cooperation.

So what does this mean in layman’s terms?  It means that not only will your costume be on display for your friends and fellow attendees, but you now have the potential to be seen worldwide on the Syfy network.  Not only that, but we’re increasing your chances by 50% by adding a second contest on Sunday.  Here are the details.

Saturday, April 6th

YOUTH COSTUME CONTEST (Ages 15 and under)

Prizes for participation will be awarded.

ADULT COSTUME CONTEST

Categories – Comic Book Heroes, Anime, and Video Games

Planet Comicon championship belts will be awarded to the top male and female in each category.  A separate award will be presented afterward for best group.

Sunday, April 7th

ADULT COSTUME CONTEST

Categories – Comic Book Villains, Fantasy, and Movies

Planet Comicon championship belts will be awarded to the top male and female in each category.  A separate award will be presented afterward for best group.

We hope you’re as excited as we are to play host to what promises to be an amazing show.  If you didn’t have proper incentive to show off your creativity before, then you’ve got no excuses now.  We’re counting on you to show the Syfy network and the world just what Kansas City is capable of.  Good luck to you!

ME/2: THE CHAOS ENGINE

91HC+lnm7gL._SL1500_

Hi there.  In case we’ve never been formally introduced, my name is Justin Cline, and I’m your friendly neighborhood webmaster here at planetcomicon.com.  Like many of you in the Kansas City area, I’m snowbound today and, in all probability, things aren’t going to change tomorrow.  So I thought I’d take a minute of your time and tell you about another project I’ve been working on for a while now.

Over the past few years, I’ve written four books for a company called Actionopolis.  Actionopolis is run by Shannon Eric Denton, whose name you might recognize from his long resume in both comic books and cartoons.  Shannon designed the line to be high-action titles that would appeal to children who don’t traditionally enjoy reading.  You can check out some of the nice things people like Mark Waid and groups like Publishers Weekly have said about the company here.

With the e-book release of Me/2, we’re doing something a little different.  The traditional pricing structure for e-books from Actionopolis is $2.99.  However, we’re currently offering Me/2 through both Barnes & Noble and Amazon at a price point of only 99 cents in the hopes that people will check us out.

Should you feel so inclined, you can purchase it for your Nook or Kindle or any other device you might use for reading, and feel free to drop me a line and tell me what you think at justinmcline@gmail.com.  Thanks for your support, and I look forward to seeing you at the show.

PLANET COMICON TESTIMONIALS

planet-background-200

Some of Planet Comicon’s biggest supporters are the local celebrities who come back year after year.  This is what some of them had to say about the show.

“I go to a lot of comic cons all over the country, but lucky for me one of my favorites is right in my own hometown.  Planet Comicon is always a great time, and the show just keeps getting better.  2013 looks to be by far the biggest and best Planet Comicon yet.  Go ahead and jump onboard for your new favorite con.” Jason Aaron

“Planet Comicon has always been one of the best regional shows in the country, and I’m excited to see it continuing to pick up steam as it grows. One of a few shows I recommend to other creators without reservation, and the ‘home show’ for almost every creator in the region.”  B. Clay Moore

“I remember the birth of Planet Comicon.  I was in the delivery room.  I was there when visionary retailers rolled up their sleeves and decided to make the Kansas City comic book scene into something better.  I worked the first Planet Comicon.  I picked up guests at the airport, and helped set up the hall.  As years went by, I got my first pro gig and sat on the other side of the table.  I’ve attended every Planet Comicon from the beginning as a fan or pro.  I’m proud that it’s my hometown show.  I’m proud to tell my pro friends that they should do this con.  I’m proud of the men and women who work hard to give Kansas City the best convention in the Midwest.  I’ve never missed a Planet Comicon, and it’s my hope that I never do.” Jai Nitz

“Planet Comicon has become the best show in the heart of America. Period. Planet brings great guests, lots of cool and excited fans, and a great vibe. I’ve talked the show up with a number of my friends in the comics business. All of them have left saying the same thing: ‘I gotta come back.’”Ande Parks

“After watching Planet Comic-Con grow over the past decade, I’m excited to see it has become much more than just the ‘local show.’  It gets bigger and better each and every year, and I’m really looking forward to it in 2013.” –Seth Peck

Thanks, guys.  We’ll see you all at the show in April.

THE RETURN OF CHICKENHARE

If you’ve not yet been exposed to the wonderful world of Chris Grine‘s Chickenhare, you’ll get a new–full-color–chance this coming February.  And meet the creator in April at Planet Comicon 2013!
