Wondering how you can participate in one of the adult costume contests at Planet Comicon? Here are the details.

The costume contest will have a booth located in the main hall on both Saturday and Sunday.  Between 1PM and 3PM, we will be taking registration for participants. The first 75 people to register will guarantee themselves a spot in the contest. There will also be an additional 25 slots given out on the floor by secret Planet Comicon representatives, giving us a grand total of 100 participants each day.

Here are the things to bear in mind about the contest:

You must be present to participate. Line-up will begin at 5PM. Instructions will be given during registration. The show begins promptly at 6PM.

You must be able to justify how your costume fits into one of the three categories for each day. Remember to think outside the box.

You will most likely be filmed for the Syfy network.

There are no fees associated with participation in the costume contest, but we do have some incredible prizes.

We look forward to seeing the incredible costumes you’ve been putting together since last year’s show, and good luck to you all!

William Binderup of Elite Comics

Many doubted us when we said that the winners of this year’s costume contests would walk away with championship belts.  But here’s the proof.

First place finishers (both male and female) in all three categories on Saturday and Sunday will walk away with one of these beauties, proving that they have what it takes to be a true champion.

Will the belt and the title be yours?  Only time will tell.

CATEGORIES FOR ADULT COSTUME CONTESTS

2640630-deadpool

Since the publication of the categories for the adult costume contests, many of you have contacted us, wondering how your character might fit into one of the three available categories on each day.  As a refresher, these are the current categories:

SATURDAY, APRIL 6TH

Comic Book Heroes

Anime

Video Games

SUNDAY, APRIL 7TH

Comic Book Villains

Fantasy

Movies

While I’ve offered suggestions to some (Doctor Who is both a hero and featured in comic books), there are far too many characters available for us to consider.  So we’re putting the responsibility on YOU.

Each contestant will have an opportunity on stage to explain exactly how your character fits into one of the three available categories.  Our advice?  Think outside the box.  Be as creative with your reasoning as you are with the costume itself.

If you’re dressed as Deadpool on Saturday, tell us why he’s a comic book hero.  If you’re dressed as Deadpool on Sunday, tell us why he’s a comic book villain.  If you’re dressed as Deadpool on Monday,… well, you may have larger problems.  Or you’re Deadpool.

Either way, you get the idea.  Wow us.  Win over the crowd.  Take home fabulous prizes including almost $5,000 CASH MONEY and a CHAMPIONSHIP BELT.  (Photos available soon.)  (The belt.  Not the cash.)

NOTE:  The youth costume contest on Saturday afternoon DOES NOT have any category restrictions.

Additional information regarding the costume contests can be found here.

Many of you on the official Facebook site have been trying to determine what final trick we had up our sleeves for this year.  Well, this is it, in the form of a press release.

This year Planet Comicon will be taking part in an upcoming Syfy network series, produced by the reality television production powerhouse, 51 Minds Entertainment, an Endemol Company. The series will give viewers an inside look into the creative world of some of the best cosplayers in the country, and will document our cosplay competition, and the convention itself. Planet Comicon is proud to welcome Syfy and 51 Minds Entertainment in this unique opportunity to shine a spotlight on the world wide phenomena known as Cosplay.

In connection with the foregoing, please be advised that 51 Minds Entertainment and its affiliated entities, employees, agents, producers and contractors will be filming scenes and background material in and around the Planet Comicon convention, related to the TV production “Cos World.” By entering certain areas of the Planet Comicon convention, you may appear, and you agree to appear, in this or another production, in any and all media now known or later devised, worldwide, in perpetuity, including in advertisements and promotions. Please do not enter such areas if you do not wish to appear. We are sorry for any inconvenience, and thank you for your cooperation.

So what does this mean in layman’s terms?  It means that not only will your costume be on display for your friends and fellow attendees, but you now have the potential to be seen worldwide on the Syfy network.  Not only that, but we’re increasing your chances by 50% by adding a second contest on Sunday.  Here are the details.

Saturday, April 6th

Prizes for participation will be awarded.

ADULT COSTUME CONTEST

Planet Comicon championship belts will be awarded to the top male and female in each category.  A separate award will be presented afterward for best group.

Sunday, April 7th

ADULT COSTUME CONTEST

Planet Comicon championship belts will be awarded to the top male and female in each category.  A separate award will be presented afterward for best group.

We hope you’re as excited as we are to play host to what promises to be an amazing show.  If you didn’t have proper incentive to show off your creativity before, then you’ve got no excuses now.  We’re counting on you to show the Syfy network and the world just what Kansas City is capable of.  Good luck to you!

The costume contest for Planet Comicon 2013 promises to be our largest ever!

Working in conjunction with Elite Comics, we will be hosting two separate costume contests: one for youth participants (ages 15 and under) and one for adults.  The youth contest will be held in the main hall on Saturday afternoon, while the adult contest will follow in the ballroom.  Exact times for both have yet to be determined.

Prizes for participation will be awarded in the youth contest, while prizes for the adult contest will be awarded in three (3) different categories.

Comics – Best Male and Best Female

Science Fiction – Best Male and Best Female

Anime – Best Male and Best Female

Afterward, there will be a separate award presented for best group.

Winners in each individual category (both male and female) will receive Planet Comicon 2013 championship belts–that’s right, CHAMPIONSHIP BELTS– as well as a feature story here on the website.

So get started on those costumes, and stay tuned for further details because we’ve got more surprises to come!
