Many of you on the official Facebook site have been trying to determine what final trick we had up our sleeves for this year. Well, this is it, in the form of a press release.
This year Planet Comicon will be taking part in an upcoming Syfy network series, produced by the reality television production powerhouse, 51 Minds Entertainment, an Endemol Company. The series will give viewers an inside look into the creative world of some of the best cosplayers in the country, and will document our cosplay competition, and the convention itself. Planet Comicon is proud to welcome Syfy and 51 Minds Entertainment in this unique opportunity to shine a spotlight on the world wide phenomena known as Cosplay.
In connection with the foregoing, please be advised that 51 Minds Entertainment and its affiliated entities, employees, agents, producers and contractors will be filming scenes and background material in and around the Planet Comicon convention, related to the TV production “Cos World.” By entering certain areas of the Planet Comicon convention, you may appear, and you agree to appear, in this or another production, in any and all media now known or later devised, worldwide, in perpetuity, including in advertisements and promotions. Please do not enter such areas if you do not wish to appear. We are sorry for any inconvenience, and thank you for your cooperation.
So what does this mean in layman’s terms? It means that not only will your costume be on display for your friends and fellow attendees, but you now have the potential to be seen worldwide on the Syfy network. Not only that, but we’re increasing your chances by 50% by adding a second contest on Sunday. Here are the details.
Saturday, April 6th
YOUTH COSTUME CONTEST (Ages 15 and under)
Prizes for participation will be awarded.
ADULT COSTUME CONTEST
Categories – Comic Book Heroes, Anime, and Video Games
Planet Comicon championship belts will be awarded to the top male and female in each category. A separate award will be presented afterward for best group.
Sunday, April 7th
ADULT COSTUME CONTEST
Categories – Comic Book Villains, Fantasy, and Movies
Planet Comicon championship belts will be awarded to the top male and female in each category. A separate award will be presented afterward for best group.
We hope you’re as excited as we are to play host to what promises to be an amazing show. If you didn’t have proper incentive to show off your creativity before, then you’ve got no excuses now. We’re counting on you to show the Syfy network and the world just what Kansas City is capable of. Good luck to you!

So what category would sci fi tv be in? Fantasy? And is group a completely separate thing? Thanks.
Groups will continue to be on theme, i.e. The Avengers would be a group of comic book heroes. We’re not looking to be exclusionary here. Which sci-fi TV show are you looking at doing?
Doctor Who
As I told someone else tonight, Doctor Who has appeared in comic books, and I would consider him a hero. It’s time to start thinking outside the call box.
So if you want to join the contest as a video game character you have to do so on Saturday or no deal? Cause if I went I’d only be able to go on Sunday
Would you consider this video game to be a fantasy? Has it been turned into a movie? Again, we’re not attempting to be exclusionary here. Expand your thinking.
What about anit-hero ie deadpool
You folks are being WAY too literal.
Is there going to be a location inside to be able to “suit up”? I have a costume that I really don’t want to try to hike in to the convention and then wait for the contest…. Thanks!
We will have an area for this, but it won’t be private. In other words, you’ll be changing there with other costumers.
Will there be any kind of “security” in this area that we can bring stuff in and change throughout the day? Similar to a coat room attendant or something so stuff won’t be messed with or walk away while we’re on the floor?
After some discussion with the promoter on this issue, I feel I need to clarify here. We will have a changing area set aside for some of our attending groups, such as the 501st. If you are in these groups, you’ve already been briefed on the situation. Unfortunately, we won’t have space set aside for everyone who might be bringing oversized costumes. We will have substantially more restroom space than in years past, but that will be the only changing area for attendees, outside of the open hallways. We are unable to provide additional security to monitor possessions that might be left unattended at the show.
Is there a firm time scheduled for the contest Saturday? I have to present in Wichita that Saturday morning, but if I can get back in time for the contest and majority of the festivities, I’m in.
I believe we are looking at 4 in the afternoon for the adult costume contest. I should have more details on that soon, but it will definitely be after the kiddos.
Someone needs to let the people at NakaKon this weekend know about this going down at Planet! I’ve done that show as well and a sick amount of cosplayers do that show.
Will do, Mario. Thanks.
are thier separate categories for the youth contest or can we dress up like anything?
You wear whatever costume you want.
ok thank you very much
I see on the FAQ that for props, you request that we not bring sharpened instruments. Would blunt swords that are secured in the sheath (i.e. near impossible to remove on-the-spot) be acceptable?
You should be able to get away with that, yes.
Do we need to sign the kiddos up before hand or just show up?
No early registration for them. They’ll just line up.
Does anyone have any information on the group of Predators? We were there Saturday and I got a pretty good clip of one of them in costume and would like to send it to them…does anyone know if they have a Facebook page?
Any ideas on when the SyFy show will air?
